On August 1st 1861 The Times newspaper published the first ever daily weather forecast. Since then forecasting has been welcomed into our homes and everyday lives as it has been rolled out across radio, television and the wider internet. It has become one of the underpinning pillars of modern society around which work, holidays, hobbies and lives are planned.

Today, local weather forecasts are easily found ‘on-demand’ via your favourite weather website or weather app on your smartphone or tablet. If you live in the UK there is a strong possibility that the forecast information you are consuming was generated here in Exeter by the UK Met Office.

As the next generation of smart home assistants embed themselves in our homes, the Met Office endeavours to provide you with the information you have come to rely on via the new medium of voice interface.

In the articles here we explore our first foray into the voice interface world, bringing on-demand high resolution UK forecasts to the Amazon Alexa smart home assistant.
